Diversify protein supply and consumption

Protein diversification can contribute strongly to the needs of a growing population and a more sustainable food production and consumption. Rabobank is committed to support this global movement. With the shift to alternative proteins, the world could potentially save tons of emissions.

Shift in consuming animal protein

The consumer choice for products with less animal proteins will gradually increase the coming decades. Considerations of a balanced diet, as well as the sustainability footprint of the animal protein sector, will encourage more consumers in developed countries to choose more often for a diet with alternative proteins.

Diversification of protein supply falls into four main categories: aquatic, plant-based, insect-based and lab-cultured. These last three sources alone could account for up to 10% of the global protein market by 2030.

Rapid development of diversified sources of protein would complement the global transition to healthy and sustainable diets. Diversification of protein comprises both a shift within animal protein from beef and pork to poultry and aquatic, and scaling of alternative protein in the form of plant-based, insect-based and lab-cultured. Alternative protein could account for up to 10% of the global protein market by 2030.
