Salim Bayri wins Volkskrant Visual Art Prize 2022
The artist Salim Bayri won the fourteenth edition of the Volkskrant Visual Art Prize. The expert jury, chaired by (former) politician Lilianne Ploumen, chose Salim Bayri, who was nominated by the writer Abdelkader Benali. "He is an artist who puts you on the wrong track at first, but fully convinces you because of his refreshing view and his sincere curiosity about everyday matters. He leaves the viewer in surprise and wonder," the jury states.
Prize awarded in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam
On Tuesday night, November 22, 2022, the artist was awarded the €10,000 prize in the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. The result was announced during a live broadcast of the AVROTROS radio show Opium Radio.
The candidates for the Volkskrant Visual Art Prize were nominated by connoisseurs from the Dutch art scene. Bayri was scouted by writer Abdelkader Benali, Kersten by Yasmijn Jarram (Kunstmuseum Den Haag), Parry by artist Aukje Dekker, and Waruguru by Hester Alberdingk Thijm (AkzoNobel Art Foundation). Part of the prize is an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. The work of the nominated artists, including winner Bayri, is still on view up to and including January 15, 2023.
Public winner
On Sunday, January 8, Minne Kersten was elected public favorite and won an amount of €2,500. In the award-winning work by Kersten, ‘Constant Companion’ (2021), a film shows how a raven wreaks havoc on its own in an installation created by the artist, the remnants of which can still be seen at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam up to and including January 15.
